George Clarke Doughty (1768-1832)

George Clarke Doughty was born in Martlesham, Suffolk and baptised on the 7th September 1768. He was the son and heir of George Doughty of Leiston and later of Theberton Hall, High Sheriff of Suffolk in 1793, and his wife Anne, daughter of John Goodwin of Martlesham Hall.

He was admitted to Caius College, Cambridge on 11th November 1788 and obtained a B.A.in 1790 and an M.A. in 1794. He had previously, on 30th June 1769, been admitted to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He was ordained, a deacon, in Norwich, on the 3rd June 1792 and a priest, by the Bishop of Norwich, in Cambridge, on the 21st September 1794. He was a curate, in Kelsale, Suffolk, in 1792.

George was instituted to the vicarage of Hoxne-cum-Denham on the 23rd September 1794 and remained there until he died. He was also made Rector of Martlesham in 1798. His son, Charles Montague, was his curate from 1823.

on the 4th July 1796 he married Catherine, daughter and heiress of Ezekeil Revett of Hoxne. They had 6 children, George Thomas (1797-1802), Charles Montague (1798-1850), Mary Ann (1799-1878), Frederick Goodwin (1800-1878), Harriet (1801-1874) and Catherine Helen (1803). Catherine died age 28 and was buried in Hoxne on the 5th October 1804. In 1826 Harriet went on to marry the Rev. Thomas D'Eye Betts of Wortham a magistrate for Suffolk and Rector of Martlesham. Frederick Goodwin married, in 1833, Beatrice, daughter and coheiress of Rear Admiral Sir Charles Cunningham of Oak Lawn, Hoxne. He inherited his father's estate at Martlesham. Rev. Charles Montague Doughty inherited Theberton Hall.

George died on the 22nd April 1832, age 63, and was buried, in Hoxne, on the 30th April.

In the North aisle of this church are deposited the remains of The Late Rev George Clarke Doughty vicar of this parish and Catherine his wife and their eldest child George Thomas who died at an early age. In the same vault are the remains of Ezekiel Revett Esq and Helen his wife the parents of the above Catherine Doughty and their daughter Harriet Revett who died at an early age. In the north aisle are also deposited the remains of Elizabeth Milligen sister of the above Helen Revett.
